So my daily agenda on Mon, Tues, and Thurs, typically starts with a call to Nadine, who has been officially dubbed the area's activities coordinator. Makili absolutely loves seeing her kids, and Nadine knows every playground, pool, beach, ice-cream shop, and fun location within a one-hour radius, so it pretty much works out for me to find out what they're up to. Last week we went to a fun park and these are a few of the shots from there. Today we went to a wading pool in Massachusetts, where Makili had a ball and enjoyed a very large popsicle for a very long time. His belly was stained green until he spent another half hour in the pool. Good times...

Makili's Live-In Pal

ALREADY?
He's a mellow fellow sometimes. When he is awake, he is very awake. He stares around the room so alertly, smiles at me frequently, and is generally pretty enjoyable. He likes to be sitting up, holding his own head up. This week he started to enjoy standing. You can tell how intensely he is working when he is standing, as he spasms and grunts and thrusts his little fists out in the air. It is pretty cute. He likes to be held at all times pretty much, though occasionally he will permit us to lay him on his back to look around. These times seem to be more infrequent lately, however.
He likes to be swaddled and held in the nursing position to fall asleep, though he has definitely had more squawky periods lately where he is difficult to console. As an added bonus, he also decided riding in the car is for the birds and screams like a banshee which also brings Makili into the crying arena, screaming, "no baby no baby no baby." But we've done a few longer trips recently (like the two hour trip to Boston and back to drop of my parents) where he does verey well for a LONG time.
Remick also likes to be held sleeping at all times. This is getting quite old. Raph and I ordered a new bed this week, and are hopeful we might actually sleep in it together sometime in the next year. Right now, Raph has been sleeping on the couch, and we take turns getting sleep all night, which inevitably means neither of us sleep a whole lot. Yesterday he took his first nap laying down in the bed, which a pretty big milestone for all of us. He also doesn't sleep soundly like at all. My midwife recommended taking him to the chiropractor, where they will hang him by his toes and tell him he had better straighten out and sleep better. So sure enough we're going to try it. (Literally they hang the babies from their toes. I have no idea if this will actually make him sleep better, but I'm willing to try. Apparently babies dig it. I'll report.)
Remick has been sporting some serious baby acne for the last two weeks making his pictures less than becoming. I go back and forth about whether or not he looks like Makili. He definitely shares some facial traits, like that brow, but his head shape is certainly different, not being as round. And he has these chubby jowls that hang down.
Remick continues to receive quite a bit of attention from his big brother. Makili enjoys laying on Remick's face until he tries to nurse on Makili's cheek. Makili will then turn to me gleaming saying, "baby gave wet kiss!" I think Remick is going to be a Makili fan in the not-too-distant future. He already tolerates his doting admirably.
Remick also continues to grow quickly. He already weighed 11 pounds 2 ounzes at his doctor's appointment this week, and is outgrowing 0-3 month clothes. Boohoo. Big already. I can't believe it! We're excited to learn more about our little peanut and can't wait to see him grow more...

Cumpulsory Summertime Activities, Part II
First of all, this is the greeting that Makili learned from Uncle Tim: "power," where you touch fists together. Makili takes this greeting very seriously.
And KAYAKING (kayak is one of Makili's new favorite words - he points them out everywhere.)
Mom, the proud paddle holder.
Brittany and Raph posing for the vacation brochure.
You can't tell but that is Raph, Makili and I. (Rest assured Remick was deemed too young for the kayak ride. Grammy and Opa babysit.)
Touring snacks.
And well, you gotta have a speedo at some point in life right? Since we have a French friend in our lives, Makili's time will be sooner than later!
He didn't really seem to dig it though.

Cumpulsory Summertime Activities, Part I
Now that the sun FINALLY came out in New England, we've been trying to fit in all the important summer activities, like strawberry picking. It's been a rough spring for the strawberry fields, but they did look pretty good. We picked seven quarts and I am planning to make a batch of jam today, if I can find the time!

Our days
I haven't taken as many pictures lately as I would like. What can I say? My hands have been full of other things. My parents just left this morning after a terrific week. We had four or five sunny days which might actually be more days than we've had ALL summer! We spent a lot of time at the beach and in our backyard, and it was absolutely lovely. The kinds of days which are the reason that we were excited to live in Kittery.
This was Makili getting super excited to dump water on my dad's feet over and over again!

Brittany likes to say that she was taking a picture above, but we're pretty sure she was texting since she managed to send 329 texts in one day (her mom called to make sure that didn't happen again!) We're excited to have her here helping out for the rest of the month. Or I should say I am excited to have the help. I think Raph is just excited for another playmate!

The Last Visit
I had my last visit with my midwives yesterday. It made me sad. It is sort of a strange thing to have a relationship with health professionals like this - fairly personal, but related only to birth. I really liked them (and I'm not just writing this because they read the blog now.) We went over the medical stuff - they check Remick and I out - but really I like talking to them. It's like a mini-therapist session, when I share stuff I don't really talk about with other people. I so recommend having an "out of hospital" midwife for a new mother. We talked today about how having a C-section with a first child really limits your options for future births. There is just so little they can do to help move you along. We also talked about babies with big heads. Its annoying to wonder why your body didn't cooperate at ALL for either birth. Was it head size for Makili? Position? Musculature? Size of cervival opening? What I do know is that I am So thankful for such a healthy happy baby. Remick is so mellow and alert and alive. I am SO thankful. (Though I'd be thankful if he'd allow me to sleep a wink too - he was up every hour last night!) He's growing rapidly, weighing close to 10.5 pounds yesterday. It actually pains me to watch him groe SO fast. His new hair is coming in and his little head isn't as soft. BUT he also has started similing at me, which of course melts me every time.

Cousins
Watching Makili and Gabrielle play together was again awesome. They are cut from the same cloth, those two. They get along SO well. Gabrielle is like the only kid who can take something out Makili's hand without getting stink-eye. He just waits to see what she is going to do with the object. Gabrielle (who is 5 month older) would "read" books to Makili, and generally showed him how to live. Two of a kind with their gentle demeanors and observant ways. So fun to watch.
