Confluence

We took Makili to the "Point," where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers converge to form the Ohio river.  It was windier and colder than we expected, but Makili ran around like a crazy man until he got tired, and then refused to even walk.  I just love the sunshine and the Pittsburgh of my youth.

A trip to the Children's Museum

I worked at this museum years and years ago. And I still know many people there. It was the place that started the working me and I still consider it to be partly mine. Makili loved it, though he probably would have been just as happy to play on the ramp just inside the door as to check out any of the other exhibits, but what can you do. You have to force kids to have fun these days. Makili definitely has a longer attention span than I do!

Crisis Averted

We made it. We survived the harried drive home, to find thigh-high snow in our driveway. We packed our things and made it to the airport and all the way to Pittsburgh, without incident. We were even able to catch an earlier flight and have our luggage show up on time!

But my camera hasn't been working. I keep getting "error 99" every time I take a picture, which as you can imagine has thwarted my interest in blogging, since in truth the pictures I take generally drive what I write about. But Raph, knowing of my deep difficulty functioning without a camera, looked into the problem and discovered that a messed up lens can cause error 99. So, for my Christmas gift (we don't generally give each other gifts - just the hand-made ornaments - more to come), he got me a lens. A portrait lens that is pretty awesome. It is a fixed 50mm lens, so I can't do the zooming I used to, but it has a kick-ass depth of field that is short and I LOVE it. So rest assured, I can shoot photos again, and maybe I'll get my act together to blog more often. That sounds eerily like a new year's resolution, but rest assured it's not. As Tamara says, "I don't do that shit!"

We were absolutely blessed with a 70 degree sunny day yesterday, so here are some of my first pictures with my new lens...

Whew - Glad this weekend is Ending!

I don't mean to complain all the time. I read some other blogs and people spend all their time posting about the high points of their life - their shining moments. Not me, no sir. I am drawn to highlight the worst moments, our endurance of them. We had planned to come see Ann on Friday night. However we were forecasted to receive up to a foot of snow, which is not news that bothers us because we have a Jeep. I didn't however count on the other million people on the road in two-wheel drive vehicles trying to get home from work. It took me an hour and 45 minutes to get to the mall exit and back home (as we decided at that point it wasn't worth it.) This normally would have taken us 20 minutes. I was crying and fuming mad at the universe for putting all those cars on the room, and a little mad at Raph for no particular reason. Poor guy takes the brunt of my anger sometimes, even when it isn't entirely his fault (though I won't say he's faultless...)

Anyway, after I got out of the car after almost 2 hours, poor Makili had been really whining for about the last 15-20 minutes. I get him inside and realize he is burning up. 103.9 temp! Which would explain why he had been a bear all day, also contributing to my grouchiness. So I medicate the poor lad and feed him again, and Raph goes out to shovel, and also announces that he intends to go play hockey in Dover later that night (which I immediately assume is the reason he wanted to turn around.)

We finally made it up here yesterday morning, though Makili had been up several times the night before with a high fever. But we're handling the fever and in between peaks, he's a pretty happy kid, so we're not too worried. We hang out at Ann's all afternoon, watching the snow continue to fall, even though yesterday was our forecasted "day off" from snow. In the afternoon I went to meet an exchange student and talk about some stuff. When I got home at 6:00, Makili was sitting on Raph's lap listlessly watching TV (which he doesn't do). I could barely get him to move, and asked if they had take his temp recently, which they had not. So I go get the thermometer, do the ear thing, and my heart jumps a beat when it reads 106.4! Seriously!

I immediately announce that we're going to the emergency room. Raph and Ann sort of thought that there wasn't much that they could do, but I was not deterred. We packed up, called Nadine, for a last minute consult (also interrupting her date night - sorry!), and headed out. I have never in my life had such a pleasant emergency room experience. We were seen immediatey by a nurse who could have been a little bit more gentle with Makili, seeing as how after that any time a doctor or nurse walked though the door he would cling to me for dear life and scream bloody murder. Anyway, this nurse tried to take his temperature orally, which was the stupidest thing I could imagine, but other than that she got a history, sent us to register, and then we were meeting with the doctor in no time. She was extremely nice and cooperative with Makili who wouldn't let her touch him. She brought him a popiscle which he wouldnt eat (Raph and I reaped the benefits of that), and determined that he had an ear infection, which I now suspect may have been brewing for a while, poor guy. And while I've heard ear infections will clear themselves up on their own, this one had a provoked a fever in excess of 106 and made him very grouchy for days, so we consented.

Now we are waiting to return back to Kittery. And the forecast when we left was for 4-6 inches. That forecast has now changed to 10-18 inches! Are you kidding me? We have a few things to do before we can head home, so we'll see how the roads are. and all the other goof balls on the road! At least we have four wheel drive and ground clearance...

Impressing the Ladies

During the power outage (and let me take a minute to express my condolences for the 17000 people in NH who are STILL without!), we spent good times with some friends. Times like we just don't do so much anymore. Where you head over without an agenda, without a plan, and just hang out. Makili spent a lot of time with older ladies, Rachel and Kayden, and really showed off his talent of locating his penis and trying to pull it out. He even got a bath with Kayden, and spent the whole time checking out his package. What a guy. Do boys grow out of this?

PS: Nadine, I LOVE these pajamas that you gave Makili.

We're powered UP!!!!

As of 1:30pm this afternoon, we are officially back on the grid! THANK GOD! (I won't mention that we're supposed to get another storm tonight, but instead focus on the momentary celebration to be had.)

Holiday Preparation

We're into day five with no power and I can't dwell on it anymore. Raph is back to work today and I'm on my own to wrangle with the fire and bathroom needs... But like I said I'm not going to dwell on it. Onto Christmas...

We went to the thrift store to buy some stocking stuffers. But we also got this helmet, which seems to fit Makili great. He loves to run around the house like a crazy man with his helmet on. We like it because Raph has been saying that MAkili needs a helmet since he was about 8 months old.

Oh and by the way, isn't this stocking that my Aunt Suzanne knitted for Makili the absolute cutest! I wish I knew how to knit something like this, but alas I have to count on my aunt. (Aunt Suzanne, we're expecting munchkin number 2, you know - and by the way I have NO IDEA why you weren't happy with this because I think it is SO awesome.) I had actually stuffed it, since we're flying to the Burgh late on Christmas Eve, and so it would be ready, but ultimately I decided I liked it hanging, with our general lack of Christmas paraphanalia, so I unstuffed it and hung it back up!

The Culprit!

We're now approaching 96 hours with no electricity. I am coming to terms with it. Even enjoying some parts of it (not the lack of running water, or the total inability to cook), like camping out around the wood stove at night, and making tea on top of it. Raph hasn't had school since Thursday and I really like having him around. We've spent way too much money eating out and entertaining ourselves with shopping trips, though we've also spent a good amount of time with electricity-blessed friends, which has been lovely. Though it is all gone now, I took some pictures of the ice on day one, so you can meet the culprit!

60+

We're now at 60+ hours of no power, but my spirits are a bit higher after spending the afternoon yesterday at our friends' Ryan and Jess's house. We got showers and watched a movie, made a tasty dinner. It made a big difference. They're upset because they still don't have internet, cable, and phone, and I keep pointing out that at least they have working toilets!
Makili had a terrific time playing with Rachel, though there was a bloody collision between the two, in which Makili cut open his lip and smeared blood ALL OVER his face and hands, making it look much more gory than it actually was. Then he had a pretty worthy fat lip thereafter, which sadly I failed to photograph.

Anyway, I thought I'd share some reasons why I haven't posted much lately, though mostly, I've just been lazy. But there was this sickness, with the swollen eyes glued shut after sleeping
There were lots of spoonfuls of honey to help a sore throat. Makili really didn't mind this medicine much at all, as contrasted by how much he detested getting eye drops put in and saline drops shot up his nose and sucked out by the blue nose sucker.
And then there is this quilt I've been trying to finish FOREVER!~ I finally got it all pieced and added the border only to find it was 8.5 inches longer on one side! 8.5 inches longer is A LOT. So I have to take the border off and sure it up. For the record, it isn't the sort of pattern that "lines up" so it is a little understandable for it to be off, but 8.5 inches! I wanted to finish this up to I could get to work on a few Christmas gifts, but I think I might have to finish those before I finish this quilt! (That is of course assuming my damn power ever gets turned on!)
Plus there have been exchange student parties, some poor exchange student behaviors, some limited Christmas shopping and making of other kinds, doctor appointments, etc. So yeah, mostly, I've just been lazy, but there have been some other things going on.

State of Emergency

Yeah, so we lived off the grid in Hawaii for a while. I loved it. Rising and falling with the sun, etc. The last 36 hours has been nothing like that. I have not enjoyed it. It has been cold (THANK GOD Larry installed a wood stove or we'd probably be in a red cross shelter.) There have been no showers or baths. I keep changing Makili's diapers thinking he pooped, only to realize that he's just stinky and needs a bath. There is no flushing of toilets. We went out to buy water yesterday and they were practically sold out. We took Makili to the mall yesterday to get out and it was COMPLETELY mobbed by people. Like probably 1/3 of the 300,000 people in the area without power went to the mall yesterday. Getting out of the damn mall was even more annoying. SO much traffic. Panera Bread, Dunkin Donuts, the food court at the mall - all incredibly LONG lines. This sucks. We were at Panera this morning when they opened to beat the crowds and use the internet and the toilets (oh glorious flushing toilets!)

Oh and by the way, we're expecting a baby at the beginning of June if you didn't already know...

Hanging with Kane and fancy cameras

We spent some time over the weekend with Kane, Abram and Ny. We also spent a few minutes using the camera I've been eyeing, the Canon D20. You see, we have a few dollars in our savings account for once in our lives and it is just driving Raph nuts. First he wanted to get a second computer, but I'm not convinced that it's necessary. So he said, "well if you could spend a bunch of money on anything you want, what would you get?" When I said "a new camera" he was astounded. So then he got all into looking at new cameras, but I don't see that we really "need" a new camera either, so... But it's fun to look. I just love this camera and the lens Cindy has on it, which is an awesome portrait lens. I love the short depth of field, and the black and white setting. I just love it. But we'll probably just save our money for a little while...we'll see. Raph has a list of places we could spend it.

Onion Snow - The Day After

Personally, I think that the day after Thanksgiving is the perfect day for the first snow fall. And this year's first snow fall was just as it should be - big fat flakes, warm weather, and quick-melting. This was Makili's first snow fall since he's been big enough to know snow is something interesting and he was interested. He loved it in fact, until it started sticking to his shoes, then he sort of had an issue with it. But he liked watching dad throw snow balls at me, and he loved pointing out when a big snow flake would hit the pavement on our walk. He would point each one out and try to say snow, which true to Makili-form, sounded like "Doe." It's the effort that counts, though, right?
