The cousins

My parents grandchildren in one place. First and only time to dates. Pretty cool.

the youngest: Hudson the early walker, happy-go-lucky, early riser, bruiser of a thing.
Remick: the never stop talking, cute as a button, full of personality from the top of his head to the tips of his toes, pistol
Kaylee: the inexhaustible, Lady and Tramp-loving, limber, always saying something, incessantly climbing sprite
Makili: the easily wonder-struck, sunny, often-whiny, gear-obsessed, artsy, love
Jenna: the ultra-competitive, quietly stubborn, arm around her younger cousins, champ
Casey: the chatty, excitable, sensitive, introspective, eyes-wide-open, darling
Austin, the perpetually positive, painfully sweet, exceedingly curious, open-minded sprout
And the oldest, Brittany: the soft-spoken, easy-going, family-loving, beauty
And the newest cousin: Ege, the garrulous, generous, kind-hearted, messy, Turk!

(surprise) reunion

Whole family together for the first time in 3 years (with 3 new members since that time!) So lovely, despite sickness, jet lag, etc. So worth it!

About photography.

I find that as my children grow, it is harder to photograph them. When they were babes like this sweet friend, Vita, their genuine beings just show through. They just are without effort.
Remick still is on the cusp of this age, so earnest about every emotion. And sometimes he'll hold still long enough for a photograph, but still not into the soul like with babies.
And with Makili, there is the camera behavior:

And besides he's just always moving so fast and in so many directions it is impossible to in any way capture what is going on with, his obsession at the moment with learning math, or winning, or drawing in his diary, or "doing homework." How he loves Diego, and learning about animals, and ice skating, always ice skating, asking every morning if we are going to skate today. He can't hold still, even in bed for the moments he is awake before he nods off. He wiggles and squirms, and breaths in your face. But I take pictures sometimes anyway, and sometimes, the texture of his skin and pout of his lips and his disheveled hair make me weak even though I know I'm not capturing "him."
And sometimes in his camera silliness, I see what his real joy looks like in the background and some tiny part of my boy is captured, without any of the complexity of his being and our relationship.
And then there is poor Ege. I just take pictures of him doing laundry:)

My favorite thing about winter

My favorite thing about winter (if you can call it that this year) is the stark beauty of the world around us. Last year our sledding trips at the gold course stand out in the same way as the frozen pond with dramatic skies. It's like our Big Sky time of year.
teaching friends' kids to skate.
while some of our other kids lay on the ice together to talk in the background.
and around us the Big Skies watching our children, reminding us of our small part of the big world we live in.

A few pictures from the phone

In December, I dropped my iphone in the toilet. And got a new fancy iphone. I was super-careful with my phone when I went in the bathroom, so that it wouldn't fall out of my pocket again, and left it on the stove one day. When I came out I went to make coffee, and turned on the wrong burner, and essentially cooked my phone, which shockingly survived minus one of the cameras. So that sucks.

Here a few old photos though. The back of the house at the beginning stages of building the mudroom, which is now there, though not sided yet. But, we now have a door! And we're working on insulating it, so if there ever is snow we can put our boots in there:)

And in December I went to NYC with my kids. Here's my Ege with Lady Liberty.
and dinosaurs tails gifted to my boys by my dear friend Mary, who moved away:( and I need to call:)

I actually downloaded new pictures to post (shocking I know) and for some reason I can't get to them from bloggeR???

Time together

I don't really know what to say about the frequency of my posting lately. I just can't seem to get into a groove. Can't seem to pull out the camera as often as I should. Can't seem to do a lot of things. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't time to put the blog aside for a while, but I so love to look back at my previous writing and pictures that I can't bring myself to do that. The truth is that my children are busy and exhausting and don't sit still for photos like they did as infants. And I'm busy too with my many jobs and the endless house project, and did I mention those busy children? Maybe I need a goal for myself. Like two posts a week or something. I don't know. I need to work on this.

I can't even say that I've been a particularly good mother lately. I have my moments though. These pictures are from an early morning walk Makili and I went on together one day at Ann's when he was up to early and threatening to wake the whole house. Sometimes it is difficult to get Makili to go outside, as he is so content to play with legos or cars or draw or whatever, but that day I made him. It was nice to have the time just the two of us to sit by the side of a creek and watch the water go buy, talking about where the water goes and where it comes from. Very philosophical I know.

Family skate plus

We spend an awful lot of time this time of year on ice skates. Last weekend it was so cold, that we couldn't even take the free route and actually paid money to skate. We met up with some friends - the McCalls and half of the Lawrence family to skate in circles.
Ege drew smiles as he went against the flow of traffic. I'm being nice by not posting a picture of him laying on the ice:)
Remick was awesome as usual, though started complaining about being cold after about 10 minutes and then he was out sidelines referee as the other kids came around to check in.
Here are the check-ins relating how many people were not wearing helmets
accounting for close calls,
and generally looking for encouragement.

Makili for his part thought that he needed to try to skate as fast as he possibly could for the entire hour and 15 minutes straight. He crashed a few times, but for the most part it was actually difficult to even get him to slow down enough for a picture. He is really good. And then of course, there were the sillies.
